<p>Invasive plant pathogens, such as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Xylella">Xylella</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fastidiosa">fastidiosa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>), pose a major threat to global agricultural and natural ecosystems, yet their impacts are rarely assessed across agro–natural interfaces where plant diversity, landscape structure and environmental stress interact. Here, we examine how <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection, environmental drivers and adjacent vegetation jointly shape <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> impacts in almond orchards embedded within a forest–agriculture mosaic. We conducted field surveys in 19 almond orchards within the <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-demarcated area of Alicante (Spain), assessing crop and wild plant health, plant composition, pathogen occurrence and climatic, topographic and landscape variables. Using generalised linear mixed models (<abbrev xlink:title="generalised linear mixed models">GLMMs</abbrev>) within a multi-model inference framework, we show that defoliation and branch dieback in almond trees were strongly associated with <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection, shrub cover, landscape configuration and drought-related climatic stress. Contrary to expectations, plant diversity at the forest–agriculture interface did not buffer <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-related damage. Instead, higher abundance of potential <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> host species in adjacent vegetation was linked to increased defoliation in infected orchards, suggesting an indirect facilitation of disease dynamics, potentially via vector persistence rather than direct pathogen spillover. In adjacent natural vegetation, plant health was more strongly influenced by abiotic stress, particularly temperature and water availability, than by <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection itself. Overall, our results identify key environmental and biotic correlates of invasion impact and highlight the need for landscape-scale approaches integrating climate stress, host composition and vector ecology in the forest-agriculture interface to improve risk assessment and management of invasive polyphagous pathogens.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>The accelerated pace of global change – driven by increased movement of people and goods, land-use shifts and climate change – has profoundly altered the dynamics of biological invasions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gilbert and Parker 2023</xref>). Amongst invasive organisms, plant pathogens pose a particularly severe threat to global food security, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Ristaino et al. 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B51">Singh et al. 2023</xref>). Invasive pathogens can exploit novel environments and host assemblages, often causing outsized impacts in naïve ecosystems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Mordecai 2011</xref>). Understanding the drivers of their establishment, spread and impact is, therefore, a central challenge in invasion biology.</p>
<p>A critical, yet underexplored setting for such invasions is the forest-agriculture interface. These ecotones are recognised for providing ecosystem services such as biodiversity conservation and natural pest regulation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Decocq et al. 2016</xref>). However, they can also act as conduits for pathogen spillover, where invasive pathogens move between managed and natural systems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Gilbert 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Alexander et al. 2014</xref>). Wild host plants in adjacent vegetation may serve as reservoirs, facilitating pathogen persistence and spread (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Roossinck and García-Arenal 2015</xref>). At the same time, environmental stressors, such as drought and extreme temperatures, can modulate host susceptibility and pathogen dynamics, potentially synergising with biological invasions to amplify impacts (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Burdon and Zhan 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Teshome et al. 2020</xref>). Consequently, a landscape-level perspective that integrates both biological and abiotic drivers is essential for predicting and managing pathogen invasions in these complex interfaces.</p>

Since its first detection in olive trees in Apulia, Italy (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Saponari et al. 2013</xref>), <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> has spread to several Mediterranean countries, including Spain, France and Portugal (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">EFSA et al. 2025</xref>). In mainland Spain, the bacteria is primarily associated with almond leaf scorch disease in Alicante, leading to significant orchard decline and large-scale eradication efforts (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">GVA 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B54">Velasco Amo et al. 2025</xref>). The invasion success of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> is attributed to its wide genetic variability, broad host range encompassing hundreds of plant species and dependence on xylem-feeding insect vectors, such as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Philaenus">Philaenus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="spumarius">spumarius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Neophilaenus">Neophilaenus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="campestris">campestris</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cornara et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B49">Schneider et al. 2021</xref>).</p>
<p>Despite growing attention to <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> in agricultural monocultures (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Greco et al. 2021</xref>), its ecology at the forest-agriculture interface remains poorly understood (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">De la Fuente et al. 2024</xref>). This knowledge gap hinders the development of effective landscape-level management strategies. In particular, three intertwined factors likely modulate the impact of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> in such interfaces: (i) abiotic conditions (e.g. climate and topography), which can stress both crop and wild plants, altering host physiology and vector activity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Pandey et al. 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Teshome et al. 2020</xref>); (ii) biotic context, including the abundance and diversity of potential <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> host plants and the availability of xylem-feeding insect vectors, which together may enhance pathogen persistence and spread across the landscape (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Roossinck and García-Arenal 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cornara et al. 2019</xref>); and (iii) landscape structure, which influences connectivity amongst hosts, vector movement and the microclimatic conditions affecting disease dynamics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Plantegenest et al. 2007</xref>). While high plant diversity is often hypothesised to dilute pathogen transmission (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Decocq et al. 2016</xref>), in the case of a generalist invader like <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>, a richer plant community might instead harbour more host species, thereby potentially increasing inoculum availability (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Johnson et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gilbert and Parker 2023</xref>). Resolving these opposing mechanisms is critical for predicting invasion outcomes.</p>
<p>Here, we investigate the magnitude and drivers of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> impact in almond orchards and natural areas, situated at the forest-agriculture interface in Alicante, Spain. We adopted an invasion-biology framework to assess how environmental stress, host availability and landscape context interact to shape disease severity in terms of plant health (e.g. defoliation and dead branches). Our specific aims were: i) to characterise the occurrence of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> in almond orchards and the adjacent natural vegetation; ii) to analyse the relationships between plant health and environmental drivers (climate, topography, landscape features, plant diversity), crop management and <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> occurrence; and iii) to evaluate whether plant diversity at the interface acts as a pathogen reservoir or as a buffer, mitigating crop damage. We hypothesised that higher plant diversity would not mitigate <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-related damage due to the pathogen’s broad host range and that environmental stressors, particularly drought and landscape configuration, would amplify invasion impacts in almond orchards. By integrating field surveys, molecular diagnostics and landscape analysis, this study provides a holistic assessment of the factors governing the impact of an emerging invasive pathogen in a heterogeneous Mediterranean agroecosystem.</p>

Climatic variables (annual and range values of temperature, precipitation and potential evapotranspiration) were obtained from CHELSA v.2.1 (<ext-link xlink:href="http://chelsa-climate.org/" ext-link-type="uri">http://chelsa-climate.org/</ext-link>) at 30 arc-second resolution. These variables represent long-term climatic conditions relevant for invasion dynamics and host stress, rather than short-term weather during the sampling year. Response variables included defoliation and dead branches in almond trees and discoloration and dead branches in adjacent vegetation.</p>
<p>Models assumed a log-normal error distribution and included orchard identity as a random effect. The GLMM framework is well suited to accommodate unbalanced sampling designs and was, therefore, appropriate for the unequal number of infected (n = 11) and uninfected (n = 8) orchards included in the study. Predictor variables were screened for collinearity (|r| &gt; 0.7), selected, based on ecological relevance (Suppl. material <xref ref-type="supplementary-material" rid="S1">1</xref>: tables S1, S2) and standardised (mean = 0, SD = 1). Model selection followed an all-subsets approach using Akaike’s Information Criterion corrected (AICc), considering modo els within four AICc units of the best model (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Hernández-Lambraño et al. 2018</xref>). Akaike weights were used to rank predictor importance and regression coefficients were estimated as weighted averages across models (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Burnham and Anderson 2002</xref>).</p>

<title>Phytosanitary status of almond orchards and adjacent vegetation</title>
<p>Across the 19 surveyed orchards, qPCR analyses confirmed the presence of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> in 36 out of 114 sampled almond trees. Based on molecular detection at the time of sampling, orchards were classified as infected (n = 11) or uninfected (n = 8). In two orchards initially considered uninfected, based on historical surveillance data, at least one almond tree tested positive by qPCR, whereas two orchards previously classified as infected showed no <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-positive trees during the survey. Orchard classification was, therefore, updated according to current infection status.</p>
        <p>Defoliation levels in almond trees ranged from 11.6 ± 11.2% to 71.6 ± 15.0%, while dead branch percentages ranged from 1.66 ± 2.58% to 57.5 ± 25.6% (mean ± SD across orchards). At the individual tree level, mean defoliation was significantly higher in <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-infected trees (53.9 ± 23.0%) than in uninfected trees (30.2 ± 23.5%). Similarly, infected trees showed a higher proportion of dead branches (37.0 ± 22.3%) than uninfected trees (25.6 ± 21.6%). Both differences were statistically significant (defoliation: t = –5.07, p &lt; 0.001; dead branches: t = –2.61, p = 0.01).</p>
<p>In the adjacent vegetation, 353 plant individuals belonging to 22 species were sampled across all orchards (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>). Of these, 155 and 154 individuals were collected around uninfected and infected orchards, respectively. Fifteen plant species occurred in both orchard types (Suppl. material <xref ref-type="supplementary-material" rid="S1">1</xref>: fig. S1). Overall, 40 individuals (11.4%) tested positive for <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> by qPCR.</p>

      <title>Discussion</title>
<p>This study provides an integrated assessment of how biotic and abiotic factors jointly shape the impacts of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> on cultivated and wild plant communities in a Mediterranean agroecosystem. Our results indicate that almond tree health decline is associated with the combined influence of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection and environmental stressors, whereas plant health in the surrounding natural vegetation was associated with abiotic conditions, but not with pathogen presence. This aligns with <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Greco et al. (2021)</xref>, who demonstrated that the interaction between multiple stressors, such as plant pathogens and abiotic factors, leads to significant crop yield losses. Similarly <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Teshome et al. (2020)</xref>, identified abiotic stress as the primary driver of plant biodiversity decline in xeric environments. This contrast underscores the differential vulnerability of managed versus natural systems to invasive pathogens and their interaction with global change drivers.</p>

<title>Infection patterns in almond orchards and adjacent vegetation</title>
<p>The detection of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> in orchards previously classified as uninfected underscores the challenges of pathogen surveillance and highlights the importance of repeated molecular monitoring, given the temporal variability of bacterial detection and symptom expression (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B54">Velasco Amo et al. 2025</xref>). Our results further confirm that visual symptoms alone are insufficient to reliably infer infection status, as they may overlap with responses to other biotic and abiotic stressors. Beyond the cultivated system, the heterogeneous distribution of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> detected in the surrounding natural vegetation reflects the complex spatial dynamics of this pathogen in Mediterranean landscapes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">EFSA et al. 2019</xref>).</p>
<p>The higher frequency of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-positive plants in adjacent vegetation to infected orchards is consistent with a potential spillover from cultivated to semi-natural habitats, as previously suggested for <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> pathosystems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Sicard et al. 2018</xref>). Species, such as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Ulex">U.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="parviflorus">parviflorus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Rhamnus">R.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="alaternus">alaternus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Cistus">Cistus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> spp., showed comparatively higher infection rates, supporting their potential role as pathogen reservoirs in Mediterranean ecosystems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Olmo et al. 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Mesmin et al. 2022</xref>). Lower Cq values in vegetation near infected orchards suggest higher bacterial loads, which may increase the likelihood that xylem-feeding insect vectors acquire the bacterium, while feeding on those infected plants (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Almeida and Nunney 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Sicard et al. 2018</xref>), although transmission processes were not directly assessed in this study. While some detections remained inconclusive due to proximity to the qPCR detection threshold, these cases highlight the need for continued surveillance to better define the host range of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> in the Alicante demarcated area. Overall, our findings support the relevance of integrating orchard- and landscape-scale monitoring to improve risk assessment and management of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> spread.</p>

<title>Environmental and biotic drivers of almond tree decline</title>
<p>Our models reveal that <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection was a primary factor explaining defoliation and dieback in almond trees, a direct consequence of xylem vessel occlusion and subsequent hydraulic failure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Camino et al. 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Landa et al. 2022</xref>). However, the impact of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> was significantly modulated by abiotic stress. Orchards with higher drought variability and those located in areas with lower soil water retention showed exacerbated symptoms when infected. This synergy between drought and <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection aligns with findings in other pathosystems and supports the “invasion opportunity” hypothesis, where abiotic stress weakens host defences and facilitates greater damage by an invasive agent (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">De Pascali et al. 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Gomez-Gallego et al. 2022</xref>).</p>
<p>Contrary to the expectation that plant diversity might dilute pathogen pressure, we found no buffering effect of overall plant diversity on almond tree health. Instead, the abundance of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> host plants in the adjacent vegetation was positively associated with increased defoliation in infected orchards. This result challenges the generalised notion of diversity-mediated resistance in the context of generalist plant pathogens (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gilbert and Parker 2023</xref>). For a pathogen with a broad host range such as <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>, a higher abundance of potential host plants is likely to increase landscape-level inoculum availability and provide a continuous habitat for insect vectors, thereby amplifying impacts on the focal crop (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Johnson et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cornara et al. 2019</xref>). Interestingly, we did not find a direct link between <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> detection in the adjacent vegetation and almond damage, suggesting that the indirect role of host plants as vector reservoirs may be more critical than their role as direct pathogen reservoirs in this system (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gilbert and Parker 2023</xref>). Furthermore, disaggregated landscape and higher shrub cover within orchards were associated with greater almond damage. Fragmented landscapes (i.e. lower contag index) likely increase edge exposure and microclimatic stress, while shrub encroachment due to lack of crop management may intensify competition for water – a particularly limiting resource in Mediterranean ecosystems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Caldeira et al. 2015</xref>). These findings underscore that the impact of an invasive pathogen is deeply embedded in the landscape matrix considering both environmental gradients and management.</p>

<title>Drivers of plant health in adjacent vegetation</title>
<p>In contrast to almond orchards, plant health in adjacent vegetation was primarily associated with abiotic stress gradients. Temperature and water availability emerged as key correlates of discoloration and branch dieback, consistent with well-documented drought-driven hydraulic constraints in Mediterranean ecosystems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Pratt et al. 2014</xref>).</p>
<p>Interestingly, higher plant diversity and greater distance from orchard edges were associated with increased symptom expression. The positive effect of distance may reflect the fact that plants located further from orchards occur within denser, less-managed semi-natural communities, where competition for limited water resources is stronger under Mediterranean conditions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">Sardans and Peñuelas 2013</xref>). Likewise, higher plant diversity may intensify competition for scarce resources during drought, potentially increasing plant susceptibility to abiotic stress rather than to <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection. Although <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> presence was not directly related to vegetation health, the abundance of potential host species was positively associated with discoloration, suggesting that vegetation composition may influence plant performance indirectly by increasing competition for limited resources or by providing more suitable habitat for xylem-feeding insect vectors, irrespective of local pathogen detection (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Caldeira et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Mesmin et al. 2022</xref>).</p>

      <sec sec-type="Management implications" id="sec19">
        <title>Management implications</title>
<p>Our results support a shift towards integrated, landscape-level management strategies for <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> that move beyond reactive eradication of infected crops. In Mediterranean agroecosystems, ecological impact appears to emerge from the interaction between pathogen presence, host availability and environmental stress, rather than from infection status alone. This highlights the need for management frameworks that explicitly incorporate landscape configuration, vegetation structure and climate context into phytosanitary decision-making (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Plantegenest et al. 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cornara et al. 2019</xref>).</p>
<p>First, management and surveillance efforts should prioritise orchards located in high-risk environments, particularly those embedded in drought-prone and fragmented landscapes, with high shrub cover and a high abundance of alternative <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> host species in the adjacent vegetation. Such conditions may amplify impacts by increasing water stress and facilitating vector persistence and movement, thereby elevating invasion pressure at the crop–natural interface (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Caldeira et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">De Pascali et al. 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Mesmin et al. 2022</xref>). Second, our findings suggest that the adjacent vegetation should be considered an integral component of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> management. While complete removal of semi-natural vegetation is neither feasible nor ecologically desirable, strategic management of key reservoir species, such as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Ulex">U.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="parviflorus">parviflorus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Cistus">Cistus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> spp. and the reduction of dense shrub cover within and immediately adjacent to orchards may help limit vector habitat suitability and reduce local pathogen pressure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Caldeira et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Mesmin et al. 2022</xref>). Such targeted interventions align with landscape-ecological approaches that seek to reduce connectivity for pests and pathogens without compromising broader biodiversity values (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Plantegenest et al. 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Loureiro et al. 2024</xref>). Third, adaptation to increasing climatic stress should be regarded as a central component of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> management under ongoing climate change. Practices that mitigate drought stress, such as optimised irrigation, soil management aimed at improving water retention or the selection of drought-resilient rootstocks may indirectly enhance host resistance and reduce <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>-related symptoms, potentially weakening the interaction between abiotic stress and pathogen impact (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Prgomet et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">De Pascali et al. 2022</xref>).</p>
<p>Finally, our results challenge the assumption that increasing plant diversity at the agriculture–natural interface inherently buffers disease risk. In the case of generalist, polyphagous invaders, such as <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev>, promoting plant diversity per se does not appear to be a reliable management strategy. Instead, management should focus on the composition and abundance of competent host species within the landscape, as host identity and density are more directly linked to invasion dynamics and vector ecology than diversity metrics alone (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Johnson et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gilbert and Parker 2023</xref>).</p>

<title>Limitations of the study and future perspectives</title>
<p>This study provides a spatially explicit snapshot of abiotic and biotic factors associated with <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> impact during an active invasion phase. However, several limitations should be acknowledged. First, the single-season sampling design does not capture the temporal dynamics of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> titers, which are known to fluctuate seasonally and amongst years (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Sicard et al. 2018</xref>). This temporal variability likely explains part of the discrepancy between prior monitoring data and our qPCR results and highlights the importance of constant surveillance to better characterise invasion trajectories. Second, although <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection was confirmed using specific qPCR assays, the visual symptoms recorded (defoliation and discoloration) can also be induced by other biotic agents or abiotic stressors. While our models attribute a significant portion of the observed damage to <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> infection and its interaction with environmental factors, we cannot fully exclude the contribution of other, undiagnosed stressors. Third, host-plant abundance was quantified using transect-based measures that serve as a proxy for reservoir size; future studies could explicitly integrate vector population densities, movement patterns and transmission assays to mechanistically link reservoir abundance with crop infection risk (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cornara et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Bodino et al. 2021</xref>).</p>
<p>Despite these limitations, our landscape-scale approach identifies key environmental and biological correlates of <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> impact and provides a robust foundation for risk assessment in Mediterranean agroecosystems. Future research should combine multi-year monitoring, vector ecology and experimental manipulation of water stress and host plant communities to test the causal relationships suggested here. Such integrative efforts will be essential for developing predictive frameworks and resilient management strategies for <abbrev xlink:title="Xylella fastidiosa">Xf</abbrev> and other invasive, polyphagous pathogens under global change.</p>
